egh didn't mean to double post...

gotta say, LED technology's not even close to par yet. I wouldn't mess with it if I were you. some extra insulation and a proper venting system for the heat should work a lot better. in specific, look for a reflector that hooks directly to a vent. aside from getting the lights -lots- closer to your plants, that should also help with controlling heat inside that small room by allowing you to vent it to an area of your choosing rather than it just rising and roasting your little snow security blanket.

cjb03, yep, all plants give off heat (actually gas) its part of that whole chloroform/green thing, and from what i understand, weed gives off a distinct heat, more than your average, say, tomatoes or lettuce, that they look for. (anyone, plz correct me if i'm wrong!)

i have 600w hps lights, one for each tent (3x3x7 size) and a pretty good sized filter in each tent as well. ducts attach to light to help remove heat, and into one main line outside of the tents with 424 cfm fan to exhaust. i think we will exhaust underneath the shed, not too hard to do, it's raised off the ground enough to have a good air space, but not enough where heat removed will melt the 2 feet of snow that gets piled up on the outside! : ) we plan on insulating the space around the tents, in our "hidden back room" and as far as keeping it warm, we'll have to keep an eye on. it gets fuckin cold up here.

as far as security and watering times, etc, shed is where we keep a couple cords of wood for stove, not to mention sleds, snow toys, etc, so ppl are already used to us out there all the time, but will definitely look at security options on post, better safe than sorry, thanks for the tip.

so in the winter, put plants closer to lights? will that affect plants at all? i'm an avid gardener, and i know that sometimes too much light can singe plants....

eh i don't know that the security faq has much in it you need.

the problem with heat is that if you use your lights as a heat source, your shit's gonna freeze overnight. you will probably want to keep an ambient temperature not much lower than 70 degrees at all times inside your tents to avoid killing them overnight. so keep your lights at the same height (as close as you can without burning the plants) and if possible heat it a different way.

and on this interesting side note, yes marijuana plants give off more heat than most other plants, with a few exceptions... one of which i've heard of is some tropical ferns. that's why some people in hawaii for instance try to grow around fern beds: the natural heat of those plants masks the natural heat of the marijuana plants from aerial scans, which are very common down there.
