I'm in the vein of, is something like this accredited? Ya know, like legit? I would look for that in any industry or profession. Let's face it, if pot is going to go mainstream everyday kind of thing, I don't want somebody from Clown College that got a degree by smoking out the Prof..

I'm so glade I started this thread. Lots of good ideas for me to think about.

I do agree a certificate in MJ botany would be a plus in the field. Laws will be changing quickly over the next few years and I'm tring to get myself ready to be in the right place at the right time.

TA I love when that brain of your gets going. A lot of good stuff buddy.

If you want an instant "in" and a more open ended type of full education, go for Horticulture and botany....don't be a 1 trick pony, atleast if shit goes sour, then you have some type of usefull education you can take anywhere

ive looked into it myself but NOT with the angle of MJ in mind

You want a job in the biz ? This is all you need to remember. As an owner i don't give 2 shits what a new hire knows about marijuana. My grow we do it my way. I don't like hearing how someone else does it every time i tell them to do something. As an owner if you put on a resume " I have X years of grow experience but i also understand this is not my show. I look forward to changing things up and doing it your way" you have a way better shot getting a job. Horticulture/botany degree be damned.

Yeah but that you stash, your a grower from 'Our' World. Theres still gonna be a lot of outsiders who are throwing money at this rapidly emerging industry and looKing for healthy and sustained returns. Not all these guys are even gonna know how to build, regulate and maintain a grow room nevermind insist on doing the grow 'their way'. Some of these dispensaries and businesses wont now their arse from their elbow and will be looking for a "Project Manager" of some sort to take care of the greenthumb parts of the business. Theres room for a MrGJ in that new world or to put it better,MrGJ can offer something that some of these cats already involved in the Industry wont ever be able to offer and thats YEARS of bangtidy grows from the Prohibition era. A Botany degree and maybe a Weed College business course with some credibility among the MJ community as a Cultivation forum Admin aswell as utilising contacts in the industry ... I'd say thats as good a head start as most people will get? I'll handle all his social media! FINALLY FOUND A USE FOR MY SOCIAL MEDIA KNOWLEDGE!:lmao:

Its exciting times for you guys out there..... exciting times:passit:

I imagine there will be a lot of niche growers providing the stores, and that is where I would like to be. Organics and outdoor come to mind as two methods that will have a higher value because most people will be doing indoor grows for a high turnover (though it will still be good weed). You won't have the quantity to make it full time, but it could be a fun side business to do a nice sized outdoor grow that is also dank as shit.

Theres a whole cottage Industry to be developed form the weed scene. Its like Booze.... you get your mega breweries who dominate the market but then you get your small independents and your micro brewers. That small style grow operation will continue but what id imagine you'll find is that growers will diversify a lot more and each grower will have a niche or specialist field. Theres no doubt if the UK were to make weed legal that id put every free hour and every dollar i have into establishing a career in the weed industry. Id succeed just on sheer determination and perseverance alone cos its a job id love and you know what they say.......

Find a Job you love...... and you'll never work another day in your life:bigok:

It's not like booze... Even your small "home breweries" are gonna be charged out the ass to start up. If you try to show up and land a lead grower job and all you have to show for it is basement or closet growers you will not get the job.

Stash, you'd have a hell of a lot better handle on the legal industry than most of us. It won't be easy for anybody wanting to transition. How do you quantify the knowledge? Just cause a cat can run 4k watts doesn't mean he can figure shit for a 20k watt grow. I know it's well over my head anyway.

For me on the outside looking in the only pluses I can get are verifiable education, a small portfolio and energy. You saying all things being equal, you wouldn't prefer somebody with a hort degree and cannabis experience vs some Joe who's built a garden or two?

This is just my 2c. If your really serious about getting somewhere in this field you are going to need experience growing. Not just mj, but other types of plants. And in different settings like indoor, hydro, outdoor and most importantly greenhouse. I firmly believe that once fully legal big greenhouse will take over. The operating cost of greenhouse is less then indoor and you can grow monster crops. Anyway where I am going with this is just that growing is something that is always changing and some things you just can't learn over the internet

And while on the subject of education I would recommend a BS in horticulture. An associates degree is ok too. I got my bs in horticulture in 2011! And have been working as a greenhouse grow ever since (not mj).

I don't know about you guys but around me hydro shops are opening up almost as often as dispensaries in colorado. This is a whole weird legal-inside-an-illegal-industry industry thing :roffl: but I swear in the last 3-4 years we went from one grow shop within hundreds of miles in any direction to SIX within 1/2 hour of where I live. Six. And I go in and these places are killing it. One place I saw online sells grow stuff AND beer and wine making stuff! Cool! I'm looking for a grow shop that has all that and a pipe/cigar section and smoking lounge like my local tobacco shop (fridge for my beer) to pass the time on a thursday night playing poker. Kinda like my own personal version of walmart-can-get-whatever-I-want-at-one-storism…

My whole vision of me in an emerging industry is as an owner, not employee. Stash no offense but I don't want to work for you buddy. :dink: Seriously what skills do I have that someone totally getting traction in colorado would give two shits about? I may be able to grow the shit out of weed, but that skill is quickly becoming a commodity. Hell, we do all we can to make that the case here on GK. No. I think the way to make a living in the cannabis market is to fashion a realistic vision of what you want to do based upon an honest assessment of the total package you bring to the table. Once you can see it, write it and organize your vision into a business plan or written plan of action of some kind. Then dive in and don't look back.

I agree with what res said completely. Energy and passion (and a little talent and luck) is what separates the wheat from the chaff.

I'd love to see you guys knock it outta the park. All you need is a product to ship and a website, and a legal market. I know some website developers who are pretty cool…

I'd be you first customer  I'd love me some true blue strains, just to judge my shit by.

One thing you could do, mock science or no, is guarantee some facet of the experience that would be subjective (so you couldn't be held to it legally) but also important. Like "Taste of Haight-Ashbury" or some shit.

"Taste of the True Hippy's Nuts"

    I dunno. Spitballing here bro.
