It's theft of intellectual property. I do it all the time. Until the big players figure out how to adequately use the net for purposes of furthering audience rather than restricting access they will always be behind the market curve. The net is the wild wild west to large entertainment providers. It's jumbled their market hold and rather than learn to capitalize on the increased market they have chosen to instead go civil enforcement of antiquated unenforceable copyright laws.
It seems like everybody does it. I just don't feel comfortable taking someone's property without compensating them.
I know I don't care. It just doesn't feel wrong to me, and when I think about it, I have a hard time equating making a copy of somebody's copy with "stealing". When I download something, people are willingly giving it to me, so how am I stealing it? The big problem here seems to be that nobody is making money off of it. If it's unethical, it's because the ethics system is based on money. I can see an argument for it (file sharing) being unethical, but not immoral. Just to clarify terms: "Ethics and morals both relate to “right” and “wrong” conduct. However, ethics refer to the series of rules provided to an individual by an external source. e.g. their profession. On the other hand, morals refer to an individual’s own principles regarding right and wrong." Interesting subject. Damn, my download speed is so slow today. Season 3 Episode 9 is coming in right now, but it's taking tooooooo long.
I copied cassettes (yeah I'm that old) and ripped CD's so the next evolution is digital to digital copies. I was one of the guys who for years paid $20 for a 25 cent disk of plastic while they grew empires. I feel nothing for them. If the artists want a shake? Use current outlets to release direct to digital and charge a reasonable fee for the ease of access and tour baby. Get on the circuit and actually earn those millions by putting in real hours on a bus and in front of your fans. The easy $$ in entertainment is going and those that had it are pissed.
