I think they should have to wait until 21. Have you ever met a 16 year old that can think straight? (no pun intended)

 

I can see why someone would disagree with 16.....but why 21? They can go to war but not have surgery they want? I guess we are getting into what they legal adult age should be. Personally I have met a lot of stupid 21 year olds as well and 18, and 19 ect. This issue has a lot different levels....

 

the only problem with that is that medically speaking, the change will take on better before/during puberty.


I think a good comparison is, and don't laugh I'm serious, is boys diagnosed with micros-penis at a young age. In order to give them a shot at a normal social life, because sexuality is part of a normal social life, is to undergo hormonal therapy, which for this type of operation, is best done during puberty while their body is still developing, including hormonal changes.


During puberty, their body will more readily adapt to the hormone replacement which will aid their body in accepting the new organs and making them fuctional... in nut-shell, if this child is ever to become a convincing boy/girl(whichever they wanna be) it actually is best, scientifically anyway, to do it early. It'll also help them adapt socially to the change without the social harrassment they'd likely encounter other-wise.


Like CannaGirl said, there's alot of different levels to this that would have to be considered.


Though personally, nature made you the gender you are for a reason.


You can always be gay/lesbian and cross-dress. But I also think most of the problems people would see with this are socially induced stigma that at a very young age, the kid would be able to avoid anyway.


Buuut, if I ever had sex with a girl who later told me she was actually a guy, it'd be hard not to hit her/him.. whatever. I'm not sure I could accept that.
